Brigadoon Public School hosted its 10th Annual Super Seasonal Sale in support of Sunbeam Lodge on December 6 and 7, 2018. Each year this event is run by Grade 5 and 6 students, encouraging the school’s families to donate gently used household items, toys and books to the sale. The students sorted the donated items and priced them between 25 cents to $3.00. They then invite their schoolmates to come and shop.

The event was a bustling one, as students routed through treasures to find the perfect item. One excited Grade 1 student was pleased to have found a princess tiara for her older sister’s birthday present that same day. A young gentleman was proudly displaying a stuffed dolphin he had claimed as his own. Many students had come to purchase holiday gifts for friends and family members. The Grade 5 and 6 students were busily wrapping items in festive paper and bows, also donated by the school community for the event.

Jennifer Leitch and Christine Gruber-Kelly, the teachers organizing this year’s sale, use the event as an environmental teaching moment. They highlight the importance of reusing items and reducing waste that might otherwise end up in landfill. Items that are left over at the end of the sale are boxed and donated to a local thrift store.

The proceeds from the event go directly to Sunbeam Lodge, a residential facility in Kitchener that provides care to medically fragile young people. This year Brigadoon’s sale raised $2213.65. At the end of the school year the students who organized this year’s sale will visit Sunbeam Lodge to share some social time with the residents there, and to see what this year’s fundraising efforts were put towards.
